Federal Nursing Jobs / Jobs with the VA, HHS, and the DOJ

The Veterans Administration (VA) is this country's largest employer of nurses, with more than 80,000 RNs, LPNs/LVNs, nursing assistants and APNs. They hire over 200,000 medical specialists at 1,400 health care facilities nationwide. Federal nursing jobs are also available in most agencies in smaller numbers. Their are federal nursing job opportunities within the Federal prison system at their 153 correctional facilities and retention centers around the country and you will find Federal nursing jobs with other agencies such as HHS, DOT, the Department of Homeland Security and others. Health and Human Services (HHS) hires nurses and medical staff for their Indian reservation clinics.

The series GS-0610 includes positions that require a professional knowledge of nursing. Positions involve providing care to patients in hospitals, clinics, occupational health units, homes, schools and communities; administering anesthetic agents and supportive treatments to patients undergoing surgery or other medical procedures; promoting better health practices; teaching; performing research in one or more phases of the field of nursing; or consulting and advising nurses who provide direct care to patients.

Nurse positions at every level may include both full performance of duties and also the learning of more advanced, difficult, and responsible procedures or care for patients with conditions requiring greater specialized nursing knowledge. This stems from the fact that nurses traditionally undergo continuing training to gain higher level skills in the immediate assignment area, to learn new skills in other areas, to become able to bear additional responsibilities as necessary, and to learn newly developed nursing processes and techniques.

There are also many GS-0620 practical nurses and GS-0621 nursing assistants available.
