The Department of Energy provides a balanced national energy plan through the coordination and administration of the energy functions of the federal government. The department is responsible for long-term, high-risk research and development of energy technology; the marketing of federal power, energy conservation; the nuclear weapons program, energy regulatory programs, and a central energy data collection and analysis program.
The majority of the department’s energy research and development activities are carried out by contractors who operate government-owned facilities.
